Do I need an Assessment or a Consultation?

What's the difference between an assessment and a consultation?

When you call, email, or submit a request, a board-certified arborist from our team will be in touch to assess the work to be done on your property. This assessment is free of charge and usually precedes a visit from our crew for pruning, planting, fertilization, or any combination of our tree care services.

A consultation may or may not lead to a visit from the Heritage Tree Care crew. An assessment will help you know if your trees and green spaces need maintenance or cleaning work.

A consultation is often done ahead of property planning or to follow local bylaws. You might need a consultation if you:

  • Are told by the city that a tree needs to be removed

  • Need advice on what trees will thrive on your property

  • Need a report to satisfy municipal bylaws ahead of construction

  • Want a plan on what to do to treat sick or injured trees

  • Noticed a bug or infestation and want to know how to treat it

What is a Master Arborist?

The master arborist designation is reserved for professional arborists who have attained the highest level of study in the field of arboriculture by the International Society of Arboriculture (aka the ISA).

Arborist Reports and City Permit Applications

Heritage Tree Care Inc, Toronto Arborists, will provide you with a detailed report by an ISA certified arborist and communicate with the City of Toronto on your behalf to:

  • Acquire an exemption from the Private-tree Bylaw for immediate removal of a dead, dying, or imminently hazardous tree.

  • Acquire a permit to remove an unwanted tree over 30cm diameter at chest height*.

  • Acquire a permit to injure or destroy a tree for construction purposes, and develop a tree protection plan and tree protection zone where needed.

*Note: Permits are issued for removal only if the homeowner agrees that a replacement tree will be planted on their property, as required by the Toronto Private Tree Bylaw. Preference is given to large-growing shade trees and native species that are hardy to this climate. Let us recommend a species of tree to fit your tastes and your yard!.

GTA Tree Bylaws

Tree Preservation By-laws are intended to encourage good forestry practices to protect and promote the value of trees in our community.

The by-law provides clear guidelines on the circumstances under which trees on private property may or may not be removed, and when permits are required. The Tree Preservation By-law’s focus is on individual trees. If you need information on construction related permits/protection  CONTACT US directly.

  • Permit required to Injure or Remove.

  • 3 or more trees over 15cm in diameter measured at 1.4m from ground.

  • 3 or more dead, dying or hazardous trees over 15cm measured at 1.4m from ground. (Including ash trees infested with EAB)

Our Expertise: Large Trees and Oaks

Large trees are an ecosystem of their own. This is why looking after mature trees requires expert judgment. Our approach starts with an assessment of the tree from root to crown. In addition to assessing the site for potential danger to the tree and surrounding areas, we survey for evidence of infestation or any problems that pose a risk, such as electrical cables.

If removal is the best way forward, our arborists work with you to oversee all safety considerations. We’ve partnered with some of the city’s leading experts in everything from operating specialized equipment, to landscaping, to repurposing salvaged wood.
