Tree Risk Assessment in Toronto

Protect Your Property And Preserve The Urban Canopy

What Is A Tree Risk Assessment?

A safe and hazard free environment is critical for living amongst trees in urban spaces. Our arborists can identify potential hazards, such as dangerous branches, or the chance of tree failure, by systematically evaluating a tree’s structural integrity, health, and surrounding area.

The process of tree risk assessment helps prevent personal injury or property damage and also helps identify potential health issues, such as disease or pest infestation, early on. Hazardous trees can be a liability for the property owner.

Our tree risk assessments also provide actionable recommendations to mitigate these and other risks. We may recommend targeted tree pruning, cabling, tree preservation techniques, or in severe cases, tree removal.

Tree risk assessments are a proactive approach that helps enhance the ecological value of your landscape by finding problems before they cause problems.

When Do I Need A Tree Risk Assessment?

As a homeowner, you should always be aware of the trees around you. Tree health is vitally important to the safety of property and people. You should consider a tree assessment if you see visible signs of damage to a tree, tree distress, cracks in the trunk, or dead or hanging branches.

Regular assessments are essential to guarantee safety if a tree is located near structures or high-traffic areas where people gather.

You may be planning a construction project that could impact nearby trees. In this case, consider having one of our consulting arborists come to the site.

The Tree Risk Assessment Process

Level 1 - Visual Assessment

Our trained arborists can evaluate and identify high-risk trees. Level 1 assessments are designed to cover trees over a large area quickly. Visual inspections from vehicles or from walking paths, streets, or sidewalks allows us to identify trees that are clearly a risk and may warrant further assessment.

Level 2 - Basic Assessment

Professional arborists use basic assessments to examine single trees for visible defects. The assessment is more in-depth and designed to evaluate a tree’s overall health and structural integrity. Open cavity inspection, sounding checks using a rubber mallet, and other techniques are used to determine whether an aspect of the tree’s structure or health indicates a further inspection will be needed.

Level 3 - Advanced Assessment Using Technology

Should the basic assessment warrant that a tree needs further inspection, our tree experts will carry out an advanced assessment. Our inspection may include:

  • A climbing inspection.

  • Examination of the root system.

  • Resistograph analysis.

  • Sonic tomography to visually represent the tree’s internal conditions.

Advanced assessments examine a tree’s roots, stem, and crown in depth. This comprehensive assessment allows us to recommend actions based on the resulting level of risk, such as tree maintenance or emergency tree removal.
