About Our Oak Pruning Services

What is Oak Tree Pruning?

Pruning preserves tree health by cutting dead, weak, and diseased limbs. It can also stop the spread of infection and promote a more reliable tree structure.

Our pruning service also includes tree trimming that focuses on safety and aesthetics.

Overgrown foliage can be an eyesore and obstruct power lines, construction, and human activities. We improve your tree’s shape to look and work the best for its location.

Selective cutting requires more care for oak trees than other tree species. This is because cuts and open wounds make them vulnerable to oak wilt and other diseases.

That is why tree pruning and other arborist services are best left to the professionals of Heritage Tree Care.

Untrained pruning can lead to accidents and irreparable damage to your tree. This is especially true for oak tree pruning, where arboricultural expertise is paramount.

Benefits of Oak Tree Pruning

There are multiple benefits to adding pruning services to your oak’s seasonal maintenance. Pruning does a great job of keeping your tree healthy and your property pleasing to the eye.

  • Promotes good tree health and growth.

  • Distributes nutrients more evenly.

  • Improves tree structure and integrity.

  • Reduces safety risks such as falling deadwood or sick branches.

  • Better resilience to strong winds, lowering the chance of storm damage.

  • Allows clearance for obstructions like utility cables.

  • Improves sunlight and air circulation in your front yard or backyard.

  • Prevents the spread of pests and tree diseases.

  • Encourages new growth.

How We Prune Your Oak Trees

At Heritage Tree Care, we follow the best arboricultural practices in our tree work. Our expert tree pruners aim for aesthetic value and tree health when trimming your oaks.

First, we assess your tree’s condition. Factors such as current health, species, and age are considered to determine the right approach for your oak.

The season is also critical when it comes to oak tree pruning. Oak trees should only be pruned in winter, or you will risk an oak wilt infection.

The pests that carry the fatal tree disease are drawn to a tree’s open wounds during the warmer seasons, so it’s best to prune once they lie dormant.

When the tree and its environment have met all the criteria, we can proceed to pruning.

We use high-quality equipment that we clean and sanitize before using on your trees.

After we remove dead and diseased branches from your tree, pruning sealants may be applied if needed. These will shield your tree from diseases and pests that may enter through the open wounds.

How to Avoid Oak Tree Wilt

Oak wilt is the biggest threat to oak trees globally. No matter how large or healthy your tree is, it still has a high chance of failure if you let the disease enter its system.

Unfortunately, oak wilt has no cure yet. Fungicides can only slow its progress. However, you can take preventive measures against it.

  • Avoid pruning your tree from April to July. Your oaks are most susceptible to oak wilt during this time.

  • When tree planting, consider choosing bur or white oaks over red ones. Red oaks will die in weeks or months and can spread the disease faster. The other oak species are more resilient and can survive for years.

  • Look out for oak wilt symptoms, such as leaves being discoloured, wilting, and falling from the tree.

  • If you suspect your tree is infected, reach out to Heritage Tree Care. We will provide solutions to protect your property and contain the disease.

What Happens If My Tree Gets Oak Wilt?

The infected tree should be removed to prevent the spread of oak wilt to nearby healthy trees. In such cases, we take extra care in our tree removal service.

A “trench” is first dug up around the infected tree. Here, we sever root grafts that can spread the pathogens underground.

We will then proceed to the tree cutting and stump grinding. We will cut down your tree and dispose of it safely, avoiding contact with oaks nearby.

The stump and root collar will be treated with herbicide first before we conduct a stump removal. This should be done before April, or the infection can spread through spores.
